Hommage to open in Benton Park

D.J. Huchzermeier, most recently the general manager of The Purple Martin, is opening a new restaurant, called Hommage, on the corner of Lemp Avenue and Lynch Street. The food at Hommage will be Alsatian, which features French cuisine with a German influence.

Korean-Mexican fusion restaurant Kalbi Taco Shack opens on Cherokee Street

The style of Korean-Mexican fusion cuisine pioneered by Los Angeles chef Roy Choi and then introduced to St. Louis a few years ago by Seoul Taco has found a new home on Cherokee Street. Kalbi Taco Shack is now open at 2301 Cherokee, one block east of South Jefferson Avenue in Benton Park.
 
Kalbi Taco Shack offers tacos, burritos, quesadillas, banh mi and rice bowls with the diner's choice of protein: kalbi (the traditional Korean dish of marinated beef short-rib meat that gives the restaurant its name), sweet-and-spicy chicken, spicy pork or tofu.

Yemanja Brasil Takes to the Streets: Launches Brazil Express

Yemanja Brasil Restaurante’s authentic Brazilian cuisine has gone mobile.

The Benton Park eatery debuted its new food truck, Brazil Express, about a month ago. The tropical-looking truck made its first major appearance at the Labor of Love Music Festival on Art Hill on July 28.

“It is a way to bring the taste of Brazil to the public and hopefully increase awareness of Yemanja Brasil Restaurant,” says owner Lemya Sidki.

The menu will feature a slew of ethnic eats such as empanadas, kabobs and traditional dishes like Feijoada de Ogum—black beans stewed with beef, sausage and pork ribs, served over rice—and Frango Rosé—chicken, mushrooms and corn in a rosa cream sauce over rice and topped with potato fries.

Table Debuts Weekly Chef's Tasting Menu

Carnival food doesn't exactly scream high-end. But at Table (1821 Cherokee Street, Benton Park, 314-449-1888), the chef's tasting menu manages to do just that. Last weekend, the reservation-only tasting menu, called The Table, debuted with a bevy of childhood carnival favorites, albeit with a twist.

Guests were greeted with snow cone cocktails. Other offerings included funnel cake, lavender rock candy, bourbon and bacon caramel corn, and cheese fries. "But really, really awesome cheese fries with pork belly," says Vires.

The Table was inspired by No Menu Mondays at Vires' other restaurant, the Home Wine Kitchen (7322 Manchester Road, Maplewood, 314-802-7676). The Table, available at Table on Friday and Saturday nights, does have a menu, but it's released the Wednesday before and changes each week. Vires says reservations are snapped up even before the fare is revealed.

Cassy Vires of Home Wine Kitchen, Table lands recipe in July Bon Appétit

Cassy Vires, owner and executive chef of Home Wine Kitchen in Maplewood and the brand-new Table in Benton Park, has contributed a recipe to the July issue of Bon Appétit magazine.

Vires is one of three chefs to provide a summer-friendly cantaloupe recipe on page 24 of the issue. Vires' recipe for a melon and prosciutto risotto is also available online.

Of the recipe, Vires tells Bon Appétit, "I like to take a classic pairing and turn it on its head."

Vires and husband Josh Renbarger opened their latest venture, the communal-dining Table, two weeks ago.
