Korean-Mexican fusion restaurant Kalbi Taco Shack opens on Cherokee Street

The style of Korean-Mexican fusion cuisine pioneered by Los Angeles chef Roy Choi and then introduced to St. Louis a few years ago by Seoul Taco has found a new home on Cherokee Street. Kalbi Taco Shack is now open at 2301 Cherokee, one block east of South Jefferson Avenue in Benton Park.
 
Kalbi Taco Shack offers tacos, burritos, quesadillas, banh mi and rice bowls with the diner's choice of protein: kalbi (the traditional Korean dish of marinated beef short-rib meat that gives the restaurant its name), sweet-and-spicy chicken, spicy pork or tofu.

Jax Cafe has Closed

 
After 3 years, Jax Cafe (ownerd by Gina and David Seltzer) restaurant at 2901 Salena Street in Benton Park, has closed.
 
"After many angsts and hours of thought, we have decided to close Jax," the restaurant announced last week in a post on its Facebook page
 
 "We have made many friends and memories here and it is with a heavy heart we say goodbye. Thank you Benton Park and our wonderful friends and family for three years of fun.

PrideFest St. Louis underway downtown

The annual St. Louis PrideFest is underway downtown near Soldiers Memorial. This year’s event will be marked by sadness and beefed up security. It was less than two weeks ago 49 people were murdered at a gay nightclub in Orlando.

Top cycling event returns to St. Louis

Four days of top professional cycling are on tap for this Labor Day, as the St. Louis' longest standing competitive cycling event is set to kick off once again.

Benton Park Classic Criterium

Benton Park Classic Criterium (Sept. 6): This race replaced the Gateway Cup Criterium that tied into Stage 1 of last year’s Tour of Missouri. The 1.77-mile course goes through the historic Benton Park neighborhood and passes the Anheuser-Busch brewery. Races started at 10 a.m. Pro women at 2:20 p.m., men at 3:30 p.m.

New Stable chef has come and gone

Photo courtesy of Solea Photography. Less than a month after signing on to lead the kitchen at The Stable, chef Ben Welch has parted ways with Amalgamated Brewing Co.'s Benton Park brewpub.

"It became clear pretty quick that it wasn't a fit for either of us," Stable partner Brad Wheeling says. "The guy is wildly talented, and I would love to own the restaurant where he could execute his concepts, (but) those just didn't work at The Stable."
